I wasn't sure if I was going to pull off a post today. To be honest I didn't have any inspiration FOR a post. But, I watched Live with Kelly this morning, and the inspiration hit me like a frying pan upside the head! For those that know me, you know that A) that's how most of my inspirational ideas hit me.... Oprah has her aha moments, some have a light bulb moment I however have a frying pan moment! ;) and B) well, I had a point b, and now I can't remember it, so we will just go with A.
Moving on, the health guru she had on his mining was talking about our sugar intake. He says you should aim for 15 grams of sugar a day in your diet.
Ok, I would like to think that I'm a smart girl. I'm pretty knowledgable in health and nutrition. It doesn't mean that I always listen, but it's always on my radar. I eat whole wheat, I try to stay away from processed food and limit my eating out. But for some reason I never really looked at my sugar. I have looked at my carb intake, and understand the whole simple sugar/ complex carb break down. (thank you to my biochemistry AND organic chemistry classes.) I have even watched my calories, and balanced my carb/protein intake (which I'm a fan of). For some reason I just never thought to look at my sugar. I've illuminated sugar before, but never thought to actually watch it. Or "track it" really.
I do watch the sugar that my children eat. If it has too much I won't let them eat it, or I limit the amount. Not for health issues but for "bouncing off the walls and making mom crazy" issues.
However, it makes perfect sense to me to watch the amount of sugar I take in. He didn't suggest you watch anything else, but you really don't have to if you cut your sugar. Most sugar is in your "not so good for you" foods anyway. However some items can be deceptive as well. I look at my Greek yogurt that I am getting ready to try. 19 grams of sugar!! Eek! Not good!
I'm not sure if I'll be able to cut down all the way to 15 immediately, but I can be more mindful of what I am eating, and dwindle it down to the 15 eventually. (I'm not a cold turkey type of person. I'm not a fan of the side effects to quitting something cold turkey. So the dwindle works for me!)
Here's to 15 grams of sugar to a healthier me my friends! Oh, and to those frying pan moments! ;)
